Emperor of Wrath by Jagger Cole

Emperor of Wrath

by Jagger Cole

Self-Published

Book 1 in the Memento Mori Series

To stop a war, I’m forced to marry a monster.

Charming and seductive. Cold-blooded and merciless. Kenzo Mori, the wrathful king of the Mori Mafia family, is a sinfully beautiful devil with a heart of ice.

He’s an enemy who's had a target on my back for years.

Now, he’s my new husband.

Our marriage of inconvenience is supposed to end the violence between the Bratva and the Yakuza.

Little does he know, the real war has only just begun.

Kenzo thinks I belong to him.

I think he’d better sleep with one eye open.

But while the enemy in my bed might be slowly dominating my nights and darkest fantasies, my heart is a battle he’ll never win.

They say all’s fair in love and war?

Well, ours has just begun.

Triggers

Darker themes and graphic depictions of past trauma and SA, as well as mentions of (consensual) somno and free use play.

Extreme violence, and murder.

It doesn't seem to matter what Jagger Cole writes - or how dark it gets - I still end up enjoying his books.

When I read the trigger warnings, and saw somno and free use play, I didn't think this was going to be a book I loved, but with the magic of consent (given before any sleeping occured), I was suddenly okay with it.

Like, it's not for me. I like my sleep.

But in Emperor of Wrath, it was great. Mostly because Jagger Cole made it a small part of the story, and definitely not a main story line.

So don't let it scare you off unless it's a trigger for you.

Now, this isn't Jagger Cole's first mafia romance - or even his fire arranged marriage, enemies to lovers romance. It's his bread and butter.

But he makes the just different enough every damn time, that when I finish the book, he usually gets a 5 star rating for me.

The characters, as always, are the best part of his books. They are each layered. Violent, and hardened when they need to be, but they are not just their occupations. Their childhoods, their pasts make up a more complicated character, that you know you should hate, but end up liking anyways.

Another difference in Emperor of Wrath from some of his other work I have read? Both Kenzo and Annika are what I classify as both morally gray characters. They both do less-than-legal things. Kenzo is high up in the mafia, Annika is connected to it through her chosen family and work. I like this. Especially since their relationship starts out years prior to this book when Annika gets one over Kenzo and steals from him.

The storyline was entertaining. A bit unpredictable in some aspects. And as usual, Jagger Cole left little eggs to future books that had me salivating for more. I can't wait for the next Memento Mori book!
