Chasing the Wild by Elliott Rose

Chasing the Wild

by Elliott Rose

Published by Cosmic Imprint Publishing

Book 1 in the Crimson Ridge Series

What happens when you’re snowed in on a mountain ranch, with the one man you definitely should not be fantasizing about?

I’ve always done what was expected of me. Layla Birch, the good girl.

Forced to grow up too fast. To take care of everything myself. I had a plan.

Only, I didn’t count on him. Colton Wilder. The cowboy nearly twice my age.

He’s my dream man. One who takes care of me, gives me a job, and makes my pulse thud harder every time he comes near.

My ex-boyfriend’s father.

The nights are long and cold on top of this mountain. As the snow grows thicker and the tension builds between us, we’re both inching closer to a line we shouldn’t cross.

Each day, it grows harder to resist the man who looks at me with longing in his eyes.

It’s tempting to forget about being the good girl for once.

No one would find out. Would they?

Triggers

A very thorough list of potential triggers is listed on the author's website here.

I had been seeing Chasing the Wild on tiktok quite a bit, to rave reviews, and was in the mood for a cowboy romance, so I downloaded it.

It didn't live up to my expectations.

I didn't hate it. I didn't love it.

It was okay.

There was an overall story that I felt was lackluster. It was interesting enough that I kept reading, but it wasn't because of the story.

The story was predictable.

I kept reading because of the spice.

No, not the romance. The spice.

Because it was hot.

Now, I'm not saying that there was no romance. Towards the end, I could believe that these two people could end up together. I just wasn't over invested, because I didn't really love the characters.

While I know many people love Chasing the Wild, I didn't. I liked it enough, but I'm still going back and forth on continuing the series. We'll see. If I do, I just won't have the highest expectations.

This is the real danger out here in small towns like this. Cowboys with impeccable manners who look like they can sweep you off your feet one minute and rail you until you forget your own name in the back seat of their truck the next.

Sage: Boned any hot cowboys?

Layla: Who says ‘boned’ these days?

Sage: Oh, I’m sorry.

Sage: Let me grab my urban dick-tionary

Sage: Fucked

Sage: Shagged

Sage: Rode like a bronco

Sage: …Take your pick.

Colton: “Then tell me why every night is a battle, Layla. Tell me why I have to damn near lock my own door.”

Layla: “Why would you—”

His gritty noise cuts me off.

Colton: “Because I’m in so much trouble when it comes to you. Tell me why the fuck I’m spending every night talking myself out of visiting the bedroom just down the hall of the most gorgeous woman I’ve ever laid eyes on, just to see how she tastes.”

Layla: “I heard a saying once…”

My fingers unclench from the blanket, allowing it to fall open and reveal my figure. Reaching out, I lift his hat off his head, setting it on my own, not missing the flare that catches light behind his honeyed eyes.

Layla: “You touch a man’s hat, you’re either planning to fight them or fuck them. So, which do you want with me, cowboy?”

But I do the rational, sane thing and don’t maul the girl half my age right here in the middle of the barn. Because I’m a gentleman.

A. Real. Fucking. Gentleman.

Colton: “There is no having to do anything, I’ve been craving this, Layla. I’ll eat you for every meal. You are goddamn beautiful and the sweetest fucking thing I’ve ever tasted. So, let me take care of you until you’re shaking and soaking my face like a good girl.”

Clearing my throat, I rest my lips against her brow.

Colton: “I shouldn’t admit this, so please don’t say anything back, Layla. But one look at you, and I’m lost inside you. I’m sinking deeper, but it’s the opposite of drowning. For what it’s worth, whatever this is, I want it so bad it fucking aches.”

Colton: “Find that sweet spot, angel. Take your aim and hit that target. You can be anything you want. I have no doubt you’ll succeed. That good heart of yours is tougher than you think. If you can survive an old bastard like me, you can reach the stars and have them falling at your feet, too.”

Sage: “God, you are smoking hot. Ten out of ten, would bang.”

Sage leans across the center console and wolf whistles at me as I slide out of the driver’s side.

Layla: “Can you not?”

I tuck the hem of my dress under my ass to make sure I’m not flashing everyone at graduation my underwear.

Layla: “I will leave you in the car with the windows cracked, I swear.”

I told you I couldn’t think of a word to describe what it felt like having you arrive in my life… and all I can think is that you’re my wildflowers after the winter, you’re the first crackle in the fireplace when it heats up, you’re the sun chasing away storm clouds.
